As we conclude the semester, it seems worthwhile to highlight the purpose (and value) of an internship. It's never too early, nor too late, to start the process of seeking out an internship. In relation to that process, there is a good bit of subjective opinion, misconception, and just plain wrong information in circulation. NACE, the National Association of Colleges and Employers, recently published some preliminary results of a survey conducted of a cross-section of US employers (early 2010). Highlights of that survey follow:

The Aberdeen Development Corporation seeks a 2010/2011 intern beginning summer, 2010. Open to any college major, this may be of particular interest to someone with a marketing background.

Kruse Motors has an immediate opening for a recent or upcoming accounting grad with an interest in the automobile industry. The firm is highly committed to hiring and training a new grad for this position. This is a multi-location GM franchisee with stores in Marshall, Montevideo, and Worthington, Minnesota.

Genuine Builders of Arlington, SD has an immediate, full-time opening for a recent grad, upcoming May, August, or December, 2010 graduate. This is an excellent opportunity for a student as the company is willing to train. Prior experience is not necessary, but an interest in the construction industry is a definite plus.

The Aberdeen Federal Credit Union has a great new opportunity for a summer, 2010 intern. This is a paid position and fully qualifies for internship credit at Northern State University. The internship is available in the Loan Department.

- The desired student must be a Business Major and interested in lending.
- Responsibilities will include:
- Gathering loan application data.
- Working with credit reports.
- Filing and computer input in regards to loan accounts.

Menards, Eau Claire, WI, seeks qualified applicants for their Management Trainee program at the Watertown, SD store. There are multiple openings at this time. Applications will be taken beginning immediately. December, 2009, May, 2010 and August, 2010 grads are all fully eligible. However, this is not an internship program, and candidates must have their degree in hand by August, 2010 at latest.

The Aberdeen, SD office of Eide Bailly will be on campus Tuesday April 13, 2010 to conduct interviews for a newly created fall internship position. Note: this opportunity is open to current students as well as upcoming May, 2010 and August, 2010 graduates.

- Full time paid audit internship
- Approximately 40 hours/ week (normally 8-5), with ability to travel out-of-town with audit team
- Internship period - July 19, 2010 through approximately December 15, 2010
- Must have completed Intermediate II.

Opportunities for Independent Living has an opening for the position of Finance Manager. This is an ideal opportunity for a May, 2010 graduate with an interest in the Aberdeen, SD area. For the qualified candidate, this would also work for internship credit starting immediately, and leading up to full-time by May gradudation.
